Student Caller Prompts Planned Gift

Thomas and Peggy Hyde were home one evening in Granville, Ohio, when Kent State student Tiffany Lowers called from the KSU PHONECENTER to ask for their support of the university's Annual Fund. They had been regular supporters and Tiffany had no reason to believe that anything unusual was about to happen. She provided updates about Kent State's College of Education, where Tom had earned two degrees. In the course of the conversation, Tom mentioned that he and Peggy had been making estate plans and were thinking of including Kent State University in their will.

Tiffany was impressed that Kent State alumni would consider such a generous gesture. "As a student caller, I have always been amazed at how much people want to help me and my fellow students succeed in getting our education. But this was a huge surprise." She promptly told Assistant Director of Annual Giving Matt Geis about the call.

The very next day, Matt contacted the Hydes with information about how they could create an endowed fund through a bequest. Not long after, Matt and Joe Macedo, director of gift planning at Kent State University, drove out to see them in person.

Kent State's timely response assisted Tom and Peggy in naming Kent State as the beneficiary of nearly one-fifth of their estate. "They came quickly and got the information to us," said Tom. "That was good because it really prompted us to get it done, instead of putting it on the back burner," Peggy added.

Dr. Thomas E. Hyde received a baccalaureate degree in mathematics from Kent State in 1964. He went on to earn a master's degree in vocational education in 1967. Following graduation he taught at Kent State, developing a successful curriculum for teachers in the field of vocational education. Tom went on to develop a statewide program and retired from the State Department of Education. Peggy is a retired Spanish teacher. The Hydes' bequest will fund scholarships for students pursuing careers as vocational education teachers.
